Donald Trump hosted the crew of Artemis II at the Oval Office in the White House, marking the successful completion of a landmark journey that has revived human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit.
Flanked by NASA Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, Trump took questions from the media as he congratulated the team for their achievement.
The four astronauts recently returned to Earth after spending 10 days orbiting the Moon, safely splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. The mission is widely regarded as a defining moment in modern space exploration, marking the first crewed journey to the Moon’s vicinity since the Apollo program.
Unlike Artemis I, which tested systems without a crew, Artemis II carried astronauts on a lunar flyby aimed at validating life-support systems, navigation, and deep-space operations. The spacecraft travelled approximately 4,06,778 km from Earth, farther than any human mission in history.
Led by NASA, the mission is seen as a major step toward establishing a sustained human presence beyond low-Earth orbit. During their journey, the astronauts orbited the Moon, capturing striking images of the lunar surface and Earth rising over the horizon, echoing iconic visuals from earlier missions while demonstrating advanced technological capabilities.
The crew also conducted key experiments and system checks designed to support future lunar landings under the Artemis programme.
One of the most critical phases came during re-entry, when the spacecraft, travelling at speeds exceeding 40,000 kmph, endured extreme heat before safely descending into the ocean. The successful splashdown highlighted the effectiveness of the Orion spacecraft’s heat shield and recovery systems.
NASA officials described Artemis II as a crucial milestone, paving the way for upcoming missions that aim to land humans on the Moon and eventually expand exploration deeper into space.
