As doctors performed a complex brain tumour surgery on a woman, she remained awake and watched her favourite star Pawan Kalyan’s film OG at a hospital in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district.
The rare procedure was carried out at DVC Hospital and Research Centre in Vadlamudi village, where surgeons successfully removed the tumour while Koteswaramma, 45, remained conscious throughout the operation.
Koteswaramma had been admitted to the hospital after experiencing episodes of unconsciousness and seizures. Following a series of medical examinations, including an MRI scan, doctors detected a tumour located close to a critical region of the brain responsible for body movement and other vital neurological functions.
Given the tumour’s sensitive location, the medical team decided to perform an Awake Craniotomy, a specialised neurosurgical procedure that allows patients to remain awake during surgery. The technique helps surgeons continuously monitor neurological functions and minimise the risk of damage to critical areas of the brain.
Before the operation, doctors learnt that Koteswaramma was a devoted fan of actor and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. To help her remain calm and comfortable during the procedure, the medical team played OG while carrying out the surgery.
As the film played, doctors regularly interacted with Koteswaramma, asking her to move her hands and legs and respond to simple instructions. Her responses enabled the surgical team to monitor brain function in real time and safely remove the tumour without affecting vital neurological areas.
The surgery was led by neurosurgeon Dr Padmanabhuni Arun Kumar, who headed the team that carried out the highly specialised procedure.
DVC Hospital and Research Centre Chairman Dhulipalla Narendra and Managing Director Dhulipalla Jyothirmayi congratulated the medical team on the successful surgery and applauded their commitment to advanced patient care.
