Actor Dhanush has shared an emotional tribute to tennis legend Rafael Nadal after watching the Netflix documentary Rafa, saying the documentary gave him a deeper understanding of the challenges the former world No. 1 faced throughout his career.

In a social media post shared on June 8, Dhanush described the documentary as an overwhelming experience and admitted he regretted criticising Nadal during difficult moments on the court. Calling the 22-time Grand Slam champion his “GOAT”, the actor said the film revealed the pain, stress and anxiety that accompanied Nadal’s journey to the top of the sport.

Reflecting on the documentary, Dhanush wrote that he now understands the struggles Nadal endured while continuing to compete at the highest level. He apologised for the times he shouted at the television when Nadal lost points, sets or matches, saying he had not fully understood the physical and mental burden the player was carrying.

The actor also praised Nadal’s determination, noting that the Spaniard consistently pushed through adversity to give his best on the court despite recurring injuries and setbacks.

Why did Nadal’s on-court routines stand out?

Dhanush said the documentary changed his perception of Nadal’s well-known match-day rituals. Referring to habits such as carefully arranging water bottles, adjusting his hair and pulling at his shorts, the actor said he now sees them as coping mechanisms rather than mere superstitions.

According to Dhanush, those routines reflected Nadal’s battle against anxiety, stress and a body that was often struggling under the demands of elite sport.

How did Dhanush describe Nadal’s legacy?

The actor also highlighted Nadal’s achievements despite dealing with numerous injuries and a chronic foot condition throughout his career. He suggested it was difficult to imagine what the tennis star might have accomplished without those physical challenges.

While acknowledging debates involving fellow greats Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, Dhanush said Nadal would always remain his greatest player of all time. He concluded his note by thanking the tennis icon for sacrificing his body and soul for the sport and for inspiring millions of fans around the world.

Rafa premiered on Netflix on May 29.
