A village sarpanch and local youth leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was seriously injured after being shot by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district on Tuesday evening, police said.
The victim, Gurbinder Singh, the sarpanch of Kadian Rajputa village in the Fatehgarh Churian Assembly segment and AAP’s youth president for that constituency, sustained two bullet injuries in the attack.
According to family members, the incident occurred when Gurbinder Singh was stepping out of his uncle’s house and preparing to get into his vehicle. At that moment, two youths waiting nearby on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on him without warning.
The attackers reportedly fired three shots, two of which struck Gurbinder Singh in the legs. After carrying out the attack, the assailants fled the scene.
Family members and villagers rushed the injured leader to the Civil Hospital in Batala. Given the seriousness of his condition, doctors referred him to a hospital in Amritsar after providing initial treatment.
Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident and launched an investigation.
DSP Fatehgarh Churian Lalit Kumar said police assisted in shifting the injured man to hospital and have registered a case. He added that investigators are examining all possible angles and gathering evidence to identify the attackers.
Meanwhile, several social media posts claiming that a gangster group had taken responsibility for the shooting have surfaced online. However, police said they have not confirmed those claims and are verifying all aspects of the case before drawing any conclusions.
Officials said efforts are underway to trace and arrest the accused, expressing confidence that the suspects will be apprehended soon.
