impossible to live: delhi judge’s last call to family after

“It’s impossible to live now,” Delhi-based judge Aman Sharma had told his father during what turned out to be his final phone call, days before he died by suicide, allegedly unable to bear the insult of his father by his wife, his family said.

Aman Sharma, a judge posted in Delhi and a native of Alwar, died by suicide on May 2. His body was brought to Alwar, where his last rites were performed on Sunday. His father, advocate Prem Kumar Sharma, lit the funeral pyre.

According to the family, Aman was deeply disturbed after his wife allegedly insulted his father in his presence. They said he could not tolerate the humiliation and took the extreme step. He allegedly used a stool from the bathroom and a shawl to hang himself in his room.

Two days before his death, Aman had called his father and said he no longer wanted to live, calling it his last call. Hearing this, his father rushed to Delhi immediately. A relative, Rajesh, said Aman had expressed that living had become impossible for him.

The family alleged that Aman was subjected to mental harassment and said the situation escalated due to ongoing disputes at home. They claimed that his sister-in-law, an IAS officer posted in Jammu, instigated his wife and contributed to tensions. They added that she lives separately from her husband, a senior IPS officer in Delhi Police. At the time of the incident, another relative from his wife’s side was also present in the house.

On May 2 afternoon, Aman allegedly took a stool kept in the bathroom and hanged himself using a shawl in his room. His father said he was outside the room at the time and heard shouting from inside, where Aman’s wife was allegedly arguing with him.

After the incident, Aman’s wife left the house with their two children. No member of the in-laws’ side attended the funeral. Several senior judges from Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan cadres reached Alwar to attend the last rites. The family said Aman had been appointed as a judge in 2021.

The family has demanded a fair and impartial investigation, calling the incident a serious crime and seeking strict action against those responsible. They said if such an incident could happen to someone who delivers justice, it could happen to anyone.

They also shared that Aman’s younger brother has been dealing with depression after a road accident and had been pursuing an LLB. His father said he had already seen hardship in the family and always wanted Aman to remain happy.

Prem Kumar Sharma said he had initially planned to arrange Aman’s marriage with a friend’s daughter, but Aman chose to marry his batchmate. Respecting his son’s decision, the family conducted the marriage as per Hindu rituals. He added that Aman never spoke about his personal disputes and was calm by nature, always respectful towards others.
