Dressed in a traditional Bengali-style dhoti, an exuberant Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday asserted that the lotus (BJP’s symbol) had now bloomed everywhere “from Gangotri to Ganga Sagar” as the party swept Bengal and returned in Assam for a third straight term. Addressing jubilant party workers at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, PM Modi switched to Bengali to assert that “poriborton” or change has come in Bengal and warned of the strictest action against infiltrators.
“From Gangotri to Gangasagar, the lotus has bloomed everywhere, in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and now West Bengal. Today, in the states situated along the banks of the Ganga, there are BJP-NDA governments,” the Prime Minister said, symbolically referring to the BJP’s victories from Uttarakhand (where the Ganga originates) to West Bengal. The other states along the Ganga – Uttar Pradesh and Bihar – also have NDA governments.
Ganga Sagar, located in Bengal, is a sacred pilgrimage site where the Ganga merges with the Bay of Bengal.
‘PORIBORTON HAS COME IN BENGAL’
The Prime Minister harped that the BJP’s win would mark a new chapter in Bengal, the birthplace of Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee. “Bangla e poriborton hoygeche (there is a wave of change in Bengal now). And now the people of Bengal have given the BJP an opportunity,” he said.
However, Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee claimed the BJP “looted” 100 seats, calling the party’s maiden win in Bengal an “immoral victory”. “It is loot, loot, loot. We will bounce back,” Mamata said.
In the run-up to the elections, “fear” was the central theme of the BJP’s election campaign. The Prime Minister raised it again during the BJP’s victory celebrations. PM Modi said, “bhay” (fear) will replace “bharosa” (trust) in Bengal.
“From today, Bengal has become free from fear and filled with confidence in development,” he said.
“Several BJP women workers have had to endure immense atrocities. You cannot imagine the hardships BJP workers have faced in Bengal, the extent of oppression and injustice they have suffered,” the Prime Minister further said.
Outlining the BJP’s plan in Bengal, PM Modi underlined that the government would focus on badlav (change), not badla (revenge), bhavishya (future), and not bhay (fear).
He also said the Ayushman Bharat Yojana would get approval in the first Cabinet meeting.
“Women will get an atmosphere of security, the youth will get employment, and migration will stop. Strictest action will also be taken against infiltrators,” PM Modi said.
PM RAISES ISSUE OF WOMEN’S SAFETY
In fact, the women’s safety issue was a key plank of the BJP’s campaign in Bengal. The RG Kar Medical College rape and murder incident was vehemently raised by the BJP. The party also gave a ticket to the victim’s mother, who won from Panihati.
In his speech, PM Modi stressed that TMC, DMK and Congress faced the ire of women voters as they didn’t let the Women’s Reservation Bill, 2026, pass in Parliament.
“I had cautioned such parties that they would have to face the ire of women. Today, the Congress party, TMC and DMK have been punished by the women of this country,” Modi said.
While the Congress was routed in Assam, the party, part of the UDF, staged a comeback in Kerala.
