Police in Gujarat’s Morbi district have solved the mystery behind a partially burnt body, uncovering a murder plot involving the victim’s wife, her lover and her mother.
The half-burnt body of a man was discovered on April 28 in a deserted area in Morbi’s Wankaner. The victim’s hands were tied, immediately raising suspicions of murder. A forensic post-mortem later confirmed that the man had been killed around four days earlier and the body was set on fire to destroy evidence.
According to Wankaner DSP Sameer Sarda, the body was charred beyond recognition, making identification difficult. However, an ‘Om’ symbol tattooed on the victim’s hand became a key clue in the investigation.
Using CCTV footage and mobile call detail records, police identified the deceased as Chhagan Ninama, a resident of Madhya Pradesh who had been living separately from his wife.
Investigators found that Chhagan and his wife Suman often fought. Police said Suman had left her husband three years ago and had since been living with her lover, Pawan Kumar Ninama, along with her two children.
During the investigation, police learned that after a factory shutdown caused by a gas crisis, Suman returned to her hometown. There, she allegedly conspired with Pawan and her mother to eliminate Chhagan.
Police said Suman and her mother brought Chhagan from Madhya Pradesh to Morbi. On the way, Pawan allegedly strangled him from behind using a rope. The accused then allegedly burned the body the same day in an attempt to prevent identification and cover up the crime.
Police have arrested all three accused and initiated further legal action in the case.
