Volkswagen has added another milestone to the GTI legacy with the new Golf GTI Edition 50 becoming the fastest front-wheel drive production car to lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The anniversary special completed the iconic 20.832km circuit in an impressive 7:44.523 minutes, eclipsing the previous record held by a front-wheel drive production vehicle.
Driven by Volkswagen test and development driver Benjamin Leuchter, the Golf GTI Edition 50 also becomes the fastest production Volkswagen ever around the legendary German circuit. The record-setting run highlights the capabilities of what is now the most powerful and performance-focused production Golf GTI ever built.
Built to celebrate 50 years of the GTI badge, the special edition model produces 325bhp and accelerates from 0-100kmph in just 5.3 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 270kmph. Volkswagen says the car combines everyday usability with motorsport-inspired engineering, staying true to the GTI philosophy that has existed since 1976.
The Golf GTI Edition 50 features a MacPherson front axle setup and a four-link rear suspension, while sitting 15mm lower than the standard Golf. Adaptive DCC chassis control is offered as standard. The record lap car was further equipped with the optional GTI Performance Package Edition 50, which lowers the ride height by an additional 5mm and adds 19-inch forged alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres.
The package also includes a lightweight titanium R-Performance exhaust system, helping improve both weight distribution and driving dynamics on track.
Speaking about the achievement, Benjamin Leuchter said the Nurburgring’s demanding layout perfectly showcased the strengths of the car. According to him, the Golf GTI Edition 50 delivers impressive power, a neutral chassis balance and excellent composure over bumps and elevation changes, making it much more than just a commemorative edition.
Volkswagen has produced over 2.5 million GTI models globally since the original Golf GTI debuted in 1976. Over the decades, the GTI formula of strong performance, sharp chassis tuning, front-wheel drive agility and daily usability has remained intact. With the Edition 50, Volkswagen appears to have pushed that formula further than ever before.
