A Noida delivery executive, who came into the spotlight in January after reportedly jumping into a water-filled drain in an attempt to rescue software engineer Yuvraj Mehta from drowning, has now been arrested in an extortion case, police said on Sunday.
Delivery executive Moninder and his brother Narendra have been taken into custody as part of a police drive against individuals allegedly extorting money from restaurant owners and street vendors in the Greater Noida region.
Acting on a complaint, Knowledge Park Police arrested the two brothers from Sector 150 on Thursday.
According to police, the accused allegedly threatened and intimidated restaurant operators and roadside vendors, demanding between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000 every month as protection money. A case was registered after a complaint from one of the alleged victims.
Police said they are verifying the duo’s criminal antecedents, adding that proceedings under the Goonda Act had already been initiated against them in 2025.
Moninder had earlier drawn public attention after the death of software engineer Mehta, whose car plunged into a 30-foot water-filled drain near Sector-150 on January 18. Following the incident, Moninder had claimed that Mehta received no immediate assistance and that he himself entered the water in an attempt to rescue him.
Meanwhile, a local court is scheduled to hear the police’s plea seeking custody remand of the two accused on Monday. The court has also summoned the brothers on the same day when their bail application is also expected to come up for hearing.
