For many couples, a honeymoon marks the beginning of married life. For one newlywed woman in Uttar Pradesh, it became the moment she realised her marriage was heading for trouble.
What was supposed to be a romantic getaway soon turned into a family vacation after her husband allegedly arrived with an unexpected entourage – his parents, sister and brother. The decision sparked a bitter dispute that has now dragged the couple to a family counselling centre and brought their marriage to the edge of divorce.
The unusual case surfaced in Meerut district, where counsellors have spent weeks trying to save the relationship.
‘HONEYMOON IS FOR A COUPLE, NOT THE WHOLE FAMILY’
According to the wife, she was looking forward to spending time alone with her husband after their wedding. Instead, she found herself sharing the trip with her in-laws and other family members.
She told counsellors that a honeymoon is meant to be private time for a husband and wife, an opportunity to understand each other and build a bond after marriage. With the entire family present throughout the trip, she said she never got that chance.
What began as disappointment soon turned into frequent arguments between the couple. The disagreement grew so serious that the matter eventually went before family counsellors.
HUSBAND SAYS HE DID NOTHING WRONG
The husband’s version of events is markedly different.
According to counsellors, he has maintained that he took his family along simply because he wanted everyone to be happy. He reportedly does not believe his decision was inappropriate and insists he had no intention of upsetting his wife.
That difference in expectations has become the central fault line in marriage.
THREE COUNSELLING SESSIONS, NO BREAKTHROUGH
The couple has already undergone three rounds of counselling, but no agreement has emerged.
Officials associated with the counselling process say another session was held recently, and the couple has been given more time to reconsider their positions. However, the deadlock remains, and divorce is now being openly discussed.
MARRIAGE ARRANGED THROUGH WEBSITE
The woman is from the Ramraj area of Meerut district, while the man lives in Delhi’s Patel Nagar. The bride is a graduate, and the groom studied hospitality management in Singapore.
Their marriage was arranged through a matrimonial website and was expected to mark the beginning of a new chapter. Instead, a honeymoon meant to bring the couple closer has become the reason their marriage may not survive its first major test.
For now, counsellors are making one final effort to bridge the gap. If the talks fail, the dispute could move towards formal separation proceedings.
