And it’s finally here. After years of development, delays, anticipation and endless rumours, Apple has finally unveiled the all-new AI-powered Siri. At WWDC 2026, the Cupertino giant introduced Siri AI, an entirely new version of its voice assistant powered by next-generation Apple Intelligence. The announcement came alongside Apple’s next-generation software lineup, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, visionOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate.
The next generation of Apple’s software ecosystem brings a host of AI-powered features, performance improvements, design refinements and safety tools. Alongside these updates is Siri AI, which Apple says is more conversational, understands personal context, can analyse on-screen content and perform actions across apps.
While Siri AI and Apple Intelligence were undoubtedly the biggest highlights of the keynote, WWDC 2026 also marked Tim Cook’s final WWDC keynote as CEO. Apple had earlier confirmed that he will step down from the role on September 1, 2026. Cook will remain with the company as Executive Chairman of Apple’s board, while longtime hardware chief John Ternus will take over as CEO.

Siri AI is finally here
The biggest announcement of the keynote was undoubtedly Siri AI. Apple says it has rebuilt the new Siri from the ground up using a new Apple Intelligence architecture developed in collaboration with Google and based on technologies behind the Gemini family of AI models.
The new Siri is said to be far more conversational than before and can understand personal context, analyse what’s on your screen, search through your apps and files, and take actions across multiple apps. Users can ask Siri to find information buried in messages, emails, photos or notes, draft emails, plan events, create reminders and even perform multi-step tasks. Siri can also tap into broad world knowledge to answer questions from the web and hold more natural back-and-forth conversations with follow-up questions.
Apple is also introducing a dedicated Siri app that stores conversation history across devices through iCloud. Siri AI is integrated across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, CarPlay and Vision Pro.
Apple’s voice assistant is also getting powerful visual intelligence capabilities. On the iPhone, Siri can now analyse what the camera sees, identify objects and locations, answer questions and suggest actions.
On Mac and iPad, Siri can understand content displayed on screen and provide contextual assistance. Apple says Siri can also help users write, edit and proofread text across apps, making it far more capable than the voice assistant users have known until now.
Next-generation Apple Intelligence
Alongside Siri AI, Apple also unveiled the next generation of Apple Intelligence. The new intelligent system for Apple’s device ecosystem combines on-device AI models with Private Cloud Compute and introduces capabilities such as personal context understanding, web-powered knowledge retrieval, image understanding, image generation and app actions. Apple says these features allow iPhone, Macbooks and other devices to better understand what users are doing, surface relevant information and perform tasks across apps.
Apple says privacy will remain at the core of the platform, with user data processed either on-device or through Private Cloud Compute without being stored or shared even with the company.
Apple also unveiled a new version of Image Playground that can generate photorealistic images, create AI artwork from text prompts and transform existing photos into different styles. According to the company, the upgraded experience is powered by more advanced image models and offers greater control over image creation and editing.
As part of the big Apple Intelligence upgrade, Apple is also giving its Photos app, a suite of new AI-powered editing tools, including an upgraded Cleanup feature, a new Extend tool for expanding image borders, and Spatial Reframe, which can help users intelligently adjust the framing and perspective of existing photos after they have been taken.
iOS 27 focuses on performance and smarter experiences
While AI took centre stage, iOS 27 will also bring a long list of quality-of-life improvements for iPhone users.
According to Apple, the new software update will make apps launch up to 30 per cent faster, while newly captured photos will appear in the Photos app up to 70 per cent faster. AirDrop transfers are also set to become up to 80 per cent faster.
The iOS 27 update will also introduce smarter switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, an improved search infrastructure, and a more responsive CPU scheduler that Apple says will benefit older iPhones as well.
Apple has also confirmed that iOS 27 will continue to support the iPhone 11 and all devices currently compatible with iOS 26, extending the company’s long-standing software support.
Other additions coming with iOS 27 include support for Android and Windows users to contribute to iCloud Shared Albums, menopause and perimenopause tracking in the Health app, custom EQ settings for AirPods, and upgraded Flyover experiences in Maps.
macOS Golden Gate for refined Mac experience
Apple also unveiled macOS Golden Gate, the next major update for Mac users.
Here, instead of introducing a dramatic redesign, Apple is focusing on refining the Liquid Glass interface it introduced last year. With macOS Golden Gate, users will get a new slider that lets them adjust the transparency effect, while readability and overall visual clarity are set to improve across the system.
Apple is also tweaking several familiar parts of the Mac experience. The update brings redesigned toolbars, edge-to-edge sidebars, colour-coded sidebar icons and refreshed app icons with enhanced Liquid Glass effects.
There’s also a big Siri upgrade coming to the Mac. Siri AI will be deeply integrated into Spotlight, allowing users to ask questions, analyse files and perform AI-powered tasks directly from the search experience. Apple says Siri will also be able to understand what’s on your screen and help complete tasks across apps, making it far more useful than before.
New child safety tools and developer features
Alongside the software upgrades, Apple also announced one of its biggest child safety updates yet.
The company introduced features such as Ask to Browse for website approvals, improved parental controls, communication safety protections for violent content, enhanced Screen Time controls and age-based recommendations developed with child development experts. Apple says these tools will give parents more control over what their children can access, who they can communicate with and how much time they spend on their devices.
For developers, Apple is expanding access to Apple Intelligence through new APIs, updated Foundation Models tools, image generation capabilities and support for third-party AI models through a new Core AI framework.
New software availability
All of Apple’s new software releases are available as developer betas starting today. Public betas will arrive next month, with the final versions expected to roll out later this fall, likely alongside the launch of the next-generation iPhone lineup.
