In a significant political shift in Assam, voters delivered a strong verdict against political dynasties, defeating the sons of three former chief ministers in the Assembly elections. Among the prominent losers were state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia.
Gogoi, son of Assam’s longest-serving chief minister Tarun Gogoi, lost the Jorhat seat to BJP MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami by a margin of 23,182 votes. A three-time MP from Jorhat in the Lok Sabha, Gogoi’s defeat marks a major setback for the Congress in the state.
Debabrata Saikia, son of former chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, also failed to retain the Nazira constituency, a long-standing family stronghold. The seat had been represented by his father and later his mother Hemoprava Saikia. Saikia, who had held the seat since 2011 and served as Leader of the Opposition since 2016, was defeated by BJP’s Mayur Borgohain by over 46,000 votes.
The third major upset came with the defeat of Diganta Barman, son of former chief minister Bhumidhar Barman. Contesting from Barkhetri, Barman lost to BJP’s Narayan Deka by a margin exceeding 84,000 votes.
Reacting to the outcome, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said there was “nothing good to feel in someone’s loss,” particularly referring to Hiteswar Saikia’s son. However, he emphasized that the results reflected a broader rejection of dynastic politics by the electorate.
“The politics of blue blood has been rejected by the people. They had multiple opportunities to establish their own identities but could not,” PTI quoted Sarma as saying.
The trend extended beyond the three high-profile defeats. Pranjal Ghatowar, son of former Union minister Paban Sing Ghatowar, also lost the Chabua-Lahowal seat to BJP’s Binod Hazarika by over 89,000 votes.
The results underscore a decisive shift in Assam’s political landscape, with voters signalling a move away from legacy politics toward performance-based mandates.
