Police in Indore are investigating after suspicious cash worth nearly Rs 2.83 crore was found inside three abandoned bags on the Sanwer-Ujjain Road on Thursday morning.
The incident created panic in the area after a local farmer spotted three unattended bags lying under a tree near Bhutta Square and alerted the police.
A police team rushed to the spot and took the bags into custody for investigation. When the bags were opened, officers found hundreds of bundles of Rs 500 currency notes inside. Initial estimates suggested that the total amount was around Rs 2.83 crore.
However, during examination, police discovered that while some genuine currency notes had been placed on top of the bundles, many packets contained fake notes and coloured plain papers inside.
Police suspect the bags may have been prepared for a large-scale fraud or illegal financial transaction.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, police cordoned off the area and launched a detailed investigation. CCTV footage from the highway and nearby areas is being examined to identify who abandoned the bags and determine the motive behind the act.
The suspicious currency bundles have been seized, and further investigation is underway, police said.
