Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to rewrite the script of IPL 2026. The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener added another record to his growing list, becoming the fastest player to 400 runs in an IPL season during their clash against Punjab Kings on April 28.

Sooryavanshi got there in just 167 balls, going past the likes of Andre Russell and Abhishek Sharma, who previously held the top spots on the list.

He set the tone yet again with a blistering 43 off just 16 balls, giving Rajasthan Royals the perfect start in a steep 223-run chase. By the time he was dismissed in the fourth over, RR had already raced to 51, putting Punjab immediately on the back foot.

That start proved crucial as RR went on to chase down the target in 19.2 overs, handing PBKS their first defeat of the season with a six-wicket win in Mullanpur.

WHAT IPL RECORD DID VAIBHAV SOORYAVANSHI BREAK?

Sooryavanshi became the fastest batter to reach 400 runs in an IPL season in terms of balls faced, getting there in just 167 deliveries.

Fastest to 400 runs in an IPL season (by balls):

  • 167 – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (2026)
  • 188 – Andre Russell (2019)
  • 195 – Abhishek Sharma (2024)
  • 197 – Nicholas Pooran (2025)
  • 200 – Glenn Maxwell (2014)

The record underlines the sheer pace at which the teenager has scored this season. With over 400 runs already and a strike rate well above 200, he has not just been consistent but also relentless.

The knock also helped him reclaim the Orange Cap, putting him ahead in the race for the most runs this season.

SOORYAVANSHI SET THE TONE IN RR CHASE

Chasing 223, RR needed a strong start and got exactly that. Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal attacked from the first over, taking RR past 50 inside four overs.

Jaiswal complemented him with a fluent 51 off 27 balls, ensuring the momentum did not drop after Sooryavanshi’s dismissal. The middle order, led by Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey, then stitched together a crucial 77-run stand to take RR home.

Earlier, Marcus Stoinis had powered PBKS to 222 for 4 with a stunning 62 not out off just 22 balls, but it wasn’t enough on a night where RR’s batting clicked throughout.

‘AMAZING TO BAT WITH HIM’: JAISWAL ON VAIBHAV

Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach has already earned him admirers across the cricketing world, including former players like Ravichandran Ashwin.

His opening partner Jaiswal also spoke about the experience of batting alongside him after the match.

“Of course, it’s amazing. I really enjoyed batting with him and he’s playing amazing. So it’s always, I’m always happy seeing from the other end, the way he’s hitting the ball,” Jaiswal said.

“I don’t think so I’m older. I’m still very young, but of course, the way he is and he’s quite young. So, I don’t know what to say about it, to be honest,” he added.

At just 15, Sooryavanshi continues to push boundaries with every outing. And if IPL 2026 has shown anything so far, it is that his rise is only just getting started.
