If you think dropped catches are the only way fielding can hurt a team, Punjab Kings offered a reminder that even well-held chances can sting just as much. On a warm evening at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, PBKS found themselves on the wrong side of that paradox. While they put down key opportunities, Sunrisers Hyderabad grabbed theirs with assurance, and that contrast told the story as they sealed a 33-run win to climb to the top of the table.

Yet, standing in their way was Pat Cummins, a captain who has built a reputation for quieting surging opponents. And on this night, much like he has done so often, Cummins and his men arrived with a plan, and the discipline to execute it when it mattered most.
Cooper Connolly tried his best to make amends for earlier lapses in the field for PBKS. However, his maiden IPL century could only repair the damage to their net run rate. The Australian finished unbeaten on 107 as wickets continued to tumble at the other end.
TRAVISHEK VS PRABHARYA
On a batting-friendly surface in Uppal, the stage was set for a Travishek vs Prabharya showdown. However, only one side turned up. While SRH’s opening stand didn’t last long, it was enough to inflict early damage on the PBKS bowlers, who have endured a difficult time in the powerplay this season.
The SRH ‘Brothers of Destruction’ raced to a 54-run stand in just 21 balls before Abhishek Sharma departed. PBKS bowlers had a clear plan: keep it short and make hitting difficult. But before any errors crept in, the duo had already punished them all around the ground. Abhishek smashed 35 off 13 before mistiming one off Lockie Ferguson.
Travis Head carried the momentum forward, taking charge immediately after Abhishek’s dismissal. He struck 38 off 19 before miscuing a delivery from Yuzvendra Chahal.
In contrast, PBKS openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya were back in the pavilion within the first seven balls of the chase. They managed just four runs between them, their lowest combined opening total in an IPL innings since 2024.
CUMMINS MASTERCLASS
While dropped chances grabbed attention, Cummins’ tactical brilliance stood out. His side did their homework to dismantle a PBKS batting unit that has chased down big totals, like their effort against Delhi Capitals, with ease this season.
SRH read the conditions well and stuck to their plans. Bowlers chipped away steadily, breaking the backbone of PBKS’ chase. Cummins’ captaincy shone through, whether it was setting the trap for Arya, who top-edged a pull, or handing the ball to Reddy, who struck with his very first delivery.
The Australian captain was rightfully adjudged the player of the match for his masterclass in defending the chase against a side which makes the chases look easy on flat pitches.
DROPPED CATCHES COST YOU 235
If PBKS thought bowling was their only concern, they were in for a long night. Dropped catches and a missed stumping allowed SRH to break free. Punjab this season has dropped around 16 to 17 catches.
After Travishek’s departure, Ishan Kishan joined forces with Heinrich Klaasen to deepen PBKS’ misery. The pair stitched together an 88-run partnership off 48 balls, pushing the game beyond reach. Both brought up their fifties with ease as PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting watched on helplessly.
“The ball got soft and started stopping a little bit in the middle overs. But I still want to put it into my pocket and take it everywhere. It is a medium-paced wicket. Fantastic to bat on,” Klaasen said after the innings.
Klaasen’s 69 off 43 proved decisive, leaving Ponting and Iyer with little room to respond. Nitish Kumar Reddy added the finishing touch, ending unbeaten on 29 off 13 deliveries. With that SRH maintained their dominance over Punjab at Uppal.
With this win, Sunrisers Hyderabad moved to 14 points with three games remaining, while Punjab Kings, who began the season in impressive fashion, sit on 13 points with four matches still to play.
