Actor Owen Cooper has made Soccer Aid history after becoming the youngest player ever to take part in the annual charity football match. The 16-year-old stepped onto the pitch at London Stadium for the 2026 edition of Soccer Aid for UNICEF, marking a major milestone in the event’s 20th anniversary year.
The Adolescence star, who rose to prominence alongside Stephen Graham in the hit Netflix drama, said it was a “real honour” to be part of the fundraiser. Cooper revealed he was not even born when the first Soccer Aid match took place, making his record-breaking appearance a notable moment in the event’s two-decade history.

Who is Owen Cooper?
Cooper became one of the UK’s most talked-about young actors following his breakthrough role in Adolescence. The four-part drama, filmed using the demanding one-shot technique, earned widespread praise for tackling themes including toxic masculinity and the influence of social media.
His performance helped propel him into the spotlight, with the teenager later winning both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Since then, Cooper has appeared in a Sam Fender music video and featured in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights.
Speaking ahead of the match, Cooper said he was proud to support a cause that raises funds to help children grow up safe, healthy and able to play.
Who else joined Soccer Aid 2026?
Cooper was among several first-time participants in this year’s match. New faces included former rugby player Joe Marler, radio presenter Jordan North and Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, also known as Nitro.
Other debutants featured internet personality GK Barry and actor Damson Idris, while a host of returning names once again took part in the annual fundraiser.
Which stars returned for the anniversary match?
England’s line-up included former footballer Jill Scott, presenter Paddy McGuinness, singer Olly Murs, actor Tom Hiddleston, singer Tom Grennan and reality TV personality Sam Thompson.
Representing the World XI were Olympic sprint legend Usain Bolt, comedian Maisie Adam, rapper Big Zuu, actor Richard Gadd and presenter Alex Brooker. Soccer Aid co-founder Robbie Williams also returned, taking on a management role for England, while Bolt managed the World XI side.
With his appearance at London Stadium, Cooper added a new chapter to Soccer Aid’s history as the youngest player ever to feature in the charity event.
