A fresh weather system is on its way to northwest India, and while a section of the internet has been busy painting it as a catastrophe, the reality is far more measured.
The system in question is a Western Disturbance, an extra-tropical storm that originates over the Mediterranean Sea and travels eastward, carrying moisture towards the Indian subcontinent.
This particular one, however, is feeble. Satellite imagery confirms it is nowhere close to the kind of powerful Western Disturbances that bring heavy snowfall to the Himalayas or flooding to the plains.
Independent meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya flagged this on X, noting that unnecessary panic is being whipped up around what is, in reality, a weak system.
WHAT WILL THE WEATHER ACTUALLY BE LIKE?
As the weak Western Disturbance moves in, it will interact with easterlies, which are winds blowing in from the east. This combination will trigger some weather activity across the region.
Between May 11 and May 13, residents of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, parts of north and east Rajasthan, and west Uttar Pradesh can expect isolated to scattered dust storms, brief spells of rain, and thundershowers.
Most of this activity will unfold between evening and early morning hours, so do not be alarmed if the sky suddenly darkens after sunset.
The India Meteorological Department has also weighed in officially. The IMD forecast a fresh spell of isolated to scattered thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour over northwest India between May 10 and May 13.
The weather department confirmed that the activity is expected to be isolated to scattered in nature, a far cry from the widespread, severe weather that has been described in some corners of social media.
In short, the official forecast and the ground reality are aligned: some activity, yes, but nothing that should send anyone into a panic.
