Right now, it is out of shelves in several Indian cities. The shortage of aluminium cans amid the Middle East conflict is what took it away. This Diet Coke drought even has the internet acting like it’s the end of day. But for Gen Z, the Diet Coke craze is no longer limited to its consumption. Sure, it is suddenly every ‘cool’ person’s drink, and a fridge full of these silver cans has to be posted on Instagram, but it has also become this generation’s most sought-after currency/obsession – an aesthetic.
Diet Coke enters home decor
Instead of throwing away the now-hard-to-get cans, Diet Coke lovers are turning them into home decor pieces. A flower vase, wall accent or a candle holder – these coveted cans are becoming it all (and of course being flaunted online).
Kabeer Kanojia, a 17-year-old student in Delhi, created a DIY Diet Coke gun accessory for his room, the first personal space he has ever had. It was also the first decor choice he made after settling into a new flat in Dwarka with his family, so as to add a touch of his personality to the space.
“Diet Coke became a part of my life during the 10th board exams preparation earlier this year,” Kanojia tells us. It was a viral reel that inspired him to create this masterpiece which he proudly boasts whenever someone visits his family at their new home.
“After the exams were over, I came across a video on Instagram featuring a Diet Coke gun like this, and decided to make it right away. I started collecting the cans and eventually put it together using Fevikwik and double tape,” he shares.
Social media platforms are loaded with more such Diet Coke decor ideas. One of the most popular one is making a heart-shaped wall hanging using these cans. Another viral video shows turning a can into a lamp by pricking holes around the typography and filling it with fairy lights.
Home decor is not where this craze ends. It is now the inspiration for summer manicures, T-shirt prints as well as party fits too.
For a generation that maintains junk journals, nothing’s too small to matter: from chip packets and concert tickets to random food bills. Everyday scraps morph into collectibles, and with Diet Coke blowing up as pop culture gold, its cans have entered that list too. They’re not just a fave drink or health hack; they’re a shiny keepsake of the ‘candemic’ – that wild era when silver cans were fridge royalty, then vanished amid global chaos.
