Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki have cracked a high-profile theft case involving jewellery worth nearly Rs 10 crore and arrested five accused in connection with the crime. Large quantities of stolen jewellery, around Rs 15 lakh in cash, and bank deposits worth Rs 20 lakh have been recovered or frozen during the investigation, officials said.

According to police, the mastermind of the theft, identified as Akarsh Singh, lived in a luxury villa directly opposite the victim’s bungalow and allegedly used an Audi car while planning the crime.

Investigators revealed that the accused had suffered heavy losses in the stock market and betting activities, following which he conspired with four of his friends to carry out the theft.

The accused allegedly targeted bungalow C-5 belonging to Ajay Singh Baghel and stole expensive jewellery worth between Rs 8 crore and Rs 10 crore. The victim had lodged a complaint with police reporting the massive theft of valuables from his residence.

Considering the seriousness of the case, Barabanki police formed five special teams to investigate the incident. With the help of CCTV footage and surveillance, police traced the accused and uncovered the conspiracy behind the theft.

During the probe, police also found that part of the stolen jewellery had been sold to a jeweller. Acting on leads, officers recovered a large quantity of jewellery and cash from the accused. In addition, nearly Rs 20 lakh deposited in two bank accounts linked to the case was frozen.

Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya announced a cash reward of Rs 25,000 for the police teams involved in solving the case.

“This theft case was solved with the help of five teams. CCTV footage and surveillance played a crucial role in cracking the case. The main accused, Akarsh Singh, lived in the villa opposite the victim’s bungalow. After suffering losses in the stock market and betting, he planned the theft along with his friends,” the SP said.

All five accused have been arrested and sent to jail, police added.
