Tamil Nadu’s 2026 election was not only about a dramatic political shift — the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, won 108 seats in its debut run — but it was also about who came out to vote.
Before diving into the details, let’s begin with the basic numbers.
The state recorded a huge jump in polling. Overall turnout rose from 72.7 per cent in 2021 to 85.1 per cent in 2026, a nearly 13-point increase. Male turnout increased from 72.8 per cent to 83.7 per cent. But the bigger jump came from women voters. Female turnout rose from 72.6 per cent in 2021 to 86.2 per cent in 2026.
Prima facie, the election looked like a story of women voters. But is it?
In 218 of Tamil Nadu’s 234 constituencies, women outnumber men on the electoral rolls. Only 16 seats have more male voters. And even among them, female turnout was higher than male turnout in 12 seats. Of these 16 seats, TVK won four.
The data shows that the TVK performed strongest not where women simply outnumber men in the demographic, but where male turnout stayed higher than female turnout. And that distinction changes the entire reading of the election.
Where men turned out more, TVK swept
Of the 218 constituencies with more women voters, in 70, male turnout exceeded female turnout. And the TVK dominated these constituencies, winning 49.
In 148 constituencies, women both outnumbered men in the rolls and in turnout. Of these constituencies where the women’s turnout advantage was between zero and one percentage points, the TVK won 19 seats. Where the gap ranged from one to three percentage points, the TVK won another 21 seats.
But beyond that, the TVK’s numbers dropped sharply.
The party won only six seats, where the women’s turnout gap was between three and five percentage points. Of the 42 constituencies where the turnout gap increased by more than five percentage points, the TVK won only nine.
DMK held ground where women voted more
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance, meanwhile, showed the opposite trend. Of the 218 women-heavy constituencies, the alliance won only nine seats where male turnout was higher. But its performance improved steadily as the women’s turnout gap widened. The alliance won 11 seats when the gap was 3–5 percentage points, and 26 seats when the gap increased by more than five percentage points.
The trend is visible even in the seats DMK managed to retain.
The DMK-led alliance had won 159 seats in 2021. In 2026, it retained only 53 of those. And among these seats, 48 had a higher female turnout percentage than a male turnout. In other words, more than 91 per cent of DMK’s retained seats were constituencies where women voted more actively than men.
This shows that while there was a broader statewide trend of heavy women’s participation in the southern state, this did not uniformly translate into victories for one side. Instead, turnout behaviour created two different political maps. In constituencies where women voted more than men, the contest became tighter, and the DMK gained. But in constituencies where male turnout stayed ahead, the TVK swept through.
That is what makes Tamil Nadu 2026 not just a wave election, but a turnout election.
