R Sabarinathan, son of Vijay’s longtime aide, wins Virugambakkam for TVK, turning a viral emotional moment into a decisive electoral victory.
In a result that blends emotion with political momentum, R Sabarinathan — the 30-year-old son of actor-politician Vijay’s long-time driver and aide — has won the Virugambakkam Assembly seat, underlining the deep personal connect at the heart of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) rise.
Sabarinathan, son of Rajendran, who has been with Vijay since his debut film Naalaiya Theerpu, secured victory by 27,086 votes, defeating DMK candidate Prabhakara Raja AMV and AIADMK’s Virugai VN Ravi, according to Election Commission data.
Speaking to reporters briefly after receiving his certificate, Sabarinathan said, “I am very happy with the win and very grateful to Vijay, he has put an end to DMK”.
His journey from relative anonymity to one of the most talked-about candidates began weeks ago when a video of him breaking down on stage went viral. The moment where Vijay walked up, wiped his tears and embraced him, struck a chord with supporters.
The Virugambakkam constituency, which has swung between parties over the past five elections, once again delivered a decisive verdict — this time in favour of a first-time candidate carrying both a personal story and a larger political wave.
